Amsterdam could join the UCI Cyclocross World Cup calendar in January 2028, with ambitious plans for a new race in the Amsterdamse Bos gathering momentum.
Former professional cyclist and journalist Thijs Zonneveld is spearheading the project alongside Hidde van Warmerdam, with World Cup organiser Flanders Classics reportedly enthusiastic about the proposal.
The opportunity has emerged because Hoogerheide, traditionally the venue for the final World Cup round, will host the 2028 World Championships. That leaves a potential vacancy on the calendar just one week before the championship.
Speaking on the In de Waaier podcast, Zonneveld revealed that a decision on whether the Amsterdam event can proceed is expected by the end of November.
Two potential locations were initially considered within the Amsterdamse Bos, but environmental concerns have ruled out the hillier Hazeheuvel site. Attention has now turned to the Bosbaan rowing lake, where banks, slopes and waterside terrain could provide an interesting cyclocross circuit.
The proposed venue also benefits from existing facilities and its proximity to Amsterdam’s Olympic Stadium.
Both Amsterdam’s municipal authorities and the Province of North Holland have expressed support for the project, although funding remains the biggest obstacle. Organisers must secure an estimated €600,000–€700,000 budget, while further discussions over permits are still required.
If successful, the race would bring World Cup cyclocross to one of Europe’s most recognisable cities, potentially attracting the sport’s biggest names just days before the World Championships.
For now, the clock is ticking towards November’s crucial decision.
