Countdown to Cyclocross

The countdown to the 2026-27 British cyclocross season is almost over, and there is a genuine sense of optimism surrounding the domestic scene. With a revamped National Trophy calendar, the return of the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup to Britain, and an exciting crop of emerging riders, the coming winter promises to be one of the most compelling in recent years.

British Cycling has confirmed a six-round Lloyds National Trophy Series, beginning in Derby during October before travelling to the new venue of Pontypool, Cyclopark, Shrewsbury and concluding with a double-header at Peel Park in Bradford. The National Championships will take place in Clanfield in January, providing a fitting climax to the domestic title race.

One of the biggest stories this winter will undoubtedly be the return of the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup to British soil. Glasgow’s December round has already generated enormous interest, with thousands of tickets sold during the pre-sale period, underlining the growing appetite for elite cyclocross in the UK.

On the race course, reigning British champion Cameron Mason will once again start among the favourites. The Scottish rider has become Britain’s benchmark performer in recent seasons and will be looking to combine another successful domestic campaign with consistent World Cup performances. Behind him, riders such as Thomas Mein, Joe Blackmore, Ben Chilton and several ambitious Under-23 competitors are expected to ensure that the racing remains fiercely competitive throughout the winter.

The women’s competition looks equally intriguing. Anna Kay remains one of Britain’s most experienced international riders and will be eager to return to the top of the domestic standings. Young stars including Cat Ferguson, whose rapid rise across several cycling disciplines continues to attract attention, are expected to add further depth whenever their road and track programmes allow. Britain’s increasingly talented junior and Under-23 women also appear ready to make significant breakthroughs this season.

British teams continue to strengthen their support for cyclocross, with several squads investing more heavily in winter programmes, rider development and European racing. That increased commitment is allowing more British riders to gain valuable experience in Belgium, the Netherlands and France before returning home for the National Trophy Series.

Perhaps the greatest strength of British cyclocross in 2026-27 is its depth. The gap between established internationals and the next generation is narrowing, while junior participation continues to grow. Combined with high-quality venues and enthusiastic spectators, the foundations are firmly in place for another memorable season.

As Britain’s elite prepare to battle for National Trophy honours and World Cup selection, fans can look forward to a winter packed with close racing, emerging talent and the unmistakable atmosphere that makes cyclocross one of the country’s most exciting cycling disciplines. With the Glasgow World Cup providing an international showcase and the domestic calendar stronger than ever, the 2026-27 season could prove to be a landmark year for British cyclocross.
