Three-time world champion Fem van Empel made an encouraging return to cyclocross at Saturday’s HG Cross Berencross in Meulebeke, finishing fourth after almost a year away from competition.
The 24-year-old Dutch rider, now representing the new Specialized TMRW team, had taken an extended break from racing to focus on her physical and mental well-being.
Starting from 24th on the grid, Van Empel quickly worked her way through the field despite the difficult, muddy conditions, eventually winning a sprint against Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado for fourth place.
Van Empel expressed her delight at returning, admitting she had missed the atmosphere of cyclocross and the spectators. Although acknowledging that her fitness still needs work, she hopes to race weekly as she builds towards the European Championships.
Her performance offered an encouraging indication that one of cyclocross’s biggest stars is on her way back.
